This Sunday February 17, Harare comes alive as the 2019 edition of the Old Mutual Harare Marathon takes place at Old Georgians Club in Groombridge.
The Old Mutual Harare marathon was the first ever Zimbabwean marathon to be recognised as a qualifying event. Old Mutual regards sport as a unifying factor for communities and the marathon is part of its numerous wellness initiatives aimed at promoting healthier living among Zimbabweans. In this year’s edition of the marathon, runners stand to walk away with $2000 as the first prize in both the male and female categories. There are also numerous prizes for winners of the different distance categories.
A total of 1300 participants are expected this year. The Old Mutual Harare Marathon is unique in that it appeals to professional and amateur runners alike, with several distances open to runners. Aside from the 42km run, walkers and runners can choose to participate in other distance categories starting from 21km, 10km and a 5 km fun run. The race also adheres to strict professional standards through the use of electronic timing to ensure accurate timing for every runner as according to global standards.
The Harare Marathon is more than a race it is a calling for the urbanite to take up the challenge and leave their busy everyday life in a quest for fitness. Start times for the races are set at 6:00am for the 42.2 km race and 6:30am for the rest of the races.
There are age limits to all the races with the minimum age for
• 42.2km set at 18 years
• 21.1 km set at 16 years
• 10km set at 14 years
• 5km set at 12 years
Categories 21.1km and 42.2km
18 under 40: Open
40 under 50: Veteran
50 under 60: Master
60 and Over: Grand Master
