Activist Musengezi Faces Court Over Assault Following Press Conference Incident

Syberth Musengezi

Political activist Syberth Musengezi appeared in court on Tuesday facing charges of assault after allegedly punching an airtime vendor who had entered his press conference in Harare under disputed circumstances.

Musengezi, known for his outspoken stance against political injustices, was granted $100 bail by Harare magistrate Ms Ruth Moyo following the incident, which unfolded on April 8 at Bothwell House, located at the busy intersection of First Street and Jason Moyo Avenue.

According to the prosecution, the altercation began outside when the complainant, Norest Taruberekera, was conducting his airtime vending business. Taruberekera is said to have engaged in a heated argument with a fellow vendor, William Mukono, after accusing him of stealing his airtime scratch cards.

The disagreement quickly escalated, with Mukono fleeing the scene and seeking refuge inside Bothwell House, where Musengezi was in the middle of hosting a press conference. Taruberekera gave chase, inadvertently entering the venue alongside Mukono.

What happened next forms the basis of the assault charge. The State alleges that Musengezi, seemingly alarmed by the intrusion, confronted the two men and demanded an explanation.

Before Taruberekera could respond, Musengezi allegedly punched him once in the face, prompting the intervention of nearby police officers who had arrived on the scene.

Taruberekera reported the incident immediately, leading to Musengezi’s arrest.

The case has drawn public attention given Musengezi’s political profile, with observers questioning whether the incident was a spontaneous reaction or indicative of deeper tensions.

Musengezi is expected to return to court as investigations continue. Meanwhile, the State has not ruled out calling additional witnesses.
