Sungura music icon Alick Macheso has shared the emotional burden he carries as several members of his band, Orchestra Mberikwazvo, grapple with serious health issues. For Macheso, seeing long-time colleagues unable to perform due to illness has been deeply troubling.
During a recent show in Harare, Macheso briefly paused the performance to acknowledge the health crises affecting his group. His mood shifted from festive to somber when dancer Selemani “Majuicy” Mpochi made a short appearance on stage — his first in weeks. Although fans cheered his presence, Macheso clarified that Majuicy was still too ill to perform.
Macheso Expresses Concern Over Dancer’s Health
While softly playing his guitar, Macheso addressed the audience, explaining that although Majuicy was present, he wasn’t fit enough to dance.
“To everyone who has been wondering where Majuicy has been — you’ve seen him here. But he’s not performing tonight because he’s still unwell. His legs are giving him trouble, and the doctor advised him to rest. The bones are not doing well,” he said.
Guitarist Tafi Nyamunda Loses Sight, Continues to Perform
Macheso also spoke about guitarist Tafi Nyamunda, whose worsening health has deeply affected the bandleader. Nyamunda has lost his eyesight and now relies on others for daily assistance. Despite this, he remains active in the band, performing with support from fellow musicians on stage.
“This situation is really worrying. It’s not just about Majuicy — there’s also Tafi Nyamunda, who is now blind. He used to see well, but not anymore. He now needs help with many basic things,” Macheso added.
Other Band Members Facing Ongoing Health Battles
The challenges don’t end there. Vocalist Elton Muropa has been absent from the stage for several months due to illness. Meanwhile, Lucky Mumiriki, a once-vital member of the group, continues to struggle with complications from a stroke he suffered in 2011. Although there had been hope he was improving, Macheso revealed the stroke returned.
“Elton Muropa has also been sick for a while, and we’re praying for his recovery. As for Lucky Mumiriki, we thought he was getting better, but the stroke came back. It’s heartbreaking,” Macheso shared.
Another member, Taurai “Ponda Ponda” Miti, has been confined to a wheelchair since a car accident in 2020. Despite the setbacks, Macheso remains committed to supporting his bandmates, providing both financial assistance and emotional support — even to those, like Mumiriki, who have not performed in over ten years.
