Another track for Sexy Warriors
By Munashe Rungano
The Warriors might have stumbled against Senegal Thursday evening, but that has not stopped the soccer loving Zimbabweans from rendering support for the outfit at the Afcon tournament.
Latest on the queue is Club DJ and events MC Wilberforce Maruma, or simply DJ Thunder, who has recorded a track which is to pay tribute and celebrate the triumph of Warriors at the ongoing continental soccer showcase in Gabon.
Maruma who is now based in South Africa said the track was a special tribute to soccer team and also the fans who rallied behind the warriors during the qualifying stages of the Afcon.
Titled Sexy Warrior, the song is a house instrumental with much similarities to beats by popular South African DJs.
“I decided to do the song with a house music feel as it’s a party song. We are celebrating what our soccer team has achieved and anticipate that more can still be achieved as the tournament progresses,” said Maruma
He added that the beat of the song was inspired by his admiration of SA house music notably songs by DJ Call Me of the Marry Me fame.
Maruma- who is son to the late Furuwa song maker William Maruma- explained the title Sexy Warrior: “After seeking superlatives to best describe the way the boys play soccer on the pitch l could not find any befitting the wizardry of (Khama) Billiat and (Kuda) Mahachi, or how prolific (Knowledge) Musona is in front of goal; not to mention our rock solid captain (Willard) Katsande. It’s just magical and they are a marvel to watch so l thought of a word which would point out to the brilliance and attractiveness of our Warriors when they do battle,” he said
Maruma , who has managed a host of artistes among them Freddy Gwala, TK Hollun and Dino Mudondo, said he worked on the song with Alikin-born Tafadzwa Gororo a 17 year old upcoming producer.
“We deliberately avoided putting vocals on the song as we wanted the fans to concentrate on enjoying the beat as they join in celebrating our own soccer talent in Gabon and also we have a surprise in store for the fans if the warriors manage to qualify for the quarter finals of the tournament,” said the one time resident DJ for City Sports Bar.
Maruma’s new offing also goes onto the list of songs penned for the national squad namely, Handei maWarriors a duet done by multi award winning contemporary artiste Jah Prayzah and sports commentator Charles Mabika among several other tracks.
