Baba Tencen does the unthinkable
By Nigel Pfunde
He may have promised everyone before but Baba Tencen will this weekend go against his word and come home.
The Pretoria based comic who rose to fame perchance after recording a clip on his mobile phone and sent to his cousin will make a grand entrance like a groom walking down the aisle with Ugandan Anne Kansiime.
Born Pepukai Zvemhare, the comedian will be staging his maiden show on home soil.
The Chivi bred comedian will share the stage with Kansime who makes her second appearance in the country alongside Q The Boss and beat boxer Probeatz.
The show will be held at Harare International Conference Centre courtesy of Xtratime Entertainment.
Baba Tencen is based in Pretoria where he relocated in search of greener pastures.
He got a job as a gardener and it is during one of his lunch breaks that he recorded a comic clip that went viral on social media under the title Kuripwa Kugara.
“I started off as a garden boy in South Africa and I recorded my first clip during lunch time. I then sent it to my cousin, with no aim of getting to be a popular person. He then sent it to other people and hence my rise to fame and people demanded more of my videos. During the time, things were also working out for me and I was promoted to work at a hotel that was owned by my boss as I had eight Ordinary Level passes,” he was quoted as saying.
He got a windfall from businessman Wicknell Chivayo who gave him R100 000 in appreciation of his online comic feats.
On Saturday he faces a daunting task to impress a real crowd rather than the ‘virtual’ fan base he has on social media.
Kansiime too started off as an online comedian and went on to make it big in stage and it will be Baba Tencen who is expected to make or break his romance with his dear audience.
The unforgiving Harare showbiz audience has in the past hurt Tocky Vibes after he failed to match their expectations and they are always ready to do it again.
