Beitbridge Man, 33, Gets 20-Year Prison Term for Rap*ng Woman, 38

A 33-year-old man from Beitbridge has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the rap* of a 38-year-old woman who was en route to a funeral.

According to a statement by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the accused emerged from the bushes armed with a sjambok, assaulting three women who were on their way to a funeral in Chief Staudze’s area, Beitbridge, around 8:30 pm on March 9, 2024.

Although the three women managed to escape in different directions, the accused pursued the complainant, seizing her cell phone and coercing her into sexual intercourse at knifepoint.

After committing the heinous act, he fled the scene, warning the victim that he would kill her if she made any noise.

Upon reuniting with her companions, the victim recounted her harrowing experience, prompting them to report the incident to the elders at the funeral, who subsequently notified the authorities. A joint effort between the police and locals led to a search party being organized.

The accused was apprehended after his shoe prints were tracked back to his residence. Authorities recovered the stolen cellphone, an okapi knife, and the shoes he wore during the assault.

Justice was served as the perpetrator now faces two decades behind bars for his reprehensible actions.
