The U.S. Department of State has informed Congress of an $8 billion arms deal with Israel, according to an American official who spoke to the BBC.

This proposed sale, which requires approval from relevant congressional committees, includes an array of weapons such as missiles, artillery shells, and bombs. The announcement comes just weeks before President Joe Biden’s term concludes. Despite criticisms related to civilian casualties in Gaza, Washington has dismissed calls to halt military support for Israel.

In August, the U.S. greenlit a separate $20 billion sale of fighter jets and other military assets to Israel. This latest package reportedly features air-to-air missiles, Hellfire missiles, and other munitions, an official revealed.

A source familiar with the matter emphasized the rationale behind the decision, stating: “The president has reiterated that Israel has the right to protect its citizens under international law and to counter threats from Iran and its proxies. We remain committed to ensuring Israel has the tools needed for its defense.”

President Biden has frequently characterized U.S. backing for Israel as unwavering. The United States remains Israel’s largest arms supplier, contributing significantly to its advanced military capabilities. From 2019 to 2023, the U.S. accounted for 69% of Israel’s major arms imports, according to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

In May 2024, the U.S. temporarily paused a shipment of 2,000lb and 500lb bombs due to concerns about a large-scale ground operation planned in Rafah, Gaza. However, the suspension drew criticism from Republicans and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who likened it to an “arms embargo.” The restriction was later eased.

This new arms transfer marks one of President Biden’s final moves to solidify his administration’s policies before he leaves office on January 20, 2025. Donald Trump, Biden’s successor, has signaled intentions to reduce U.S. involvement in foreign conflicts but maintains strong support for Israel. During his campaign, Trump urged Israel to expedite its military operations in Gaza.

Israel’s offensive in Gaza followed a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in over 1,200 deaths and 251 kidnappings. According to Gaza’s Hamas-controlled health ministry, more than 45,580 individuals have since lost their lives in the conflict.
