Harare magistrate Fadzai Mtombeni sentenced Blessing Mutota to 25 years in prison for his heinous crimes. Mutota stood accused of three counts of rape and two counts of robbery, marking a reign of terror that ended in the courtroom.
Mtombeni remarked, “The typical sentencing range for rape falls between 15 to 20 years. However, considering the gravity of the offenses and the vulnerability of the victims, a stricter punishment is warranted.”
Highlighting the severity of Mutota’s actions, Mtombeni noted, “The crimes were committed under aggravating circumstances, occurring at night with evidence of premeditation.”

The prosecution, led by Kelvin Munyimi, presented a damning case. It revealed Mutota’s sinister pattern: breaking into homes under the cover of darkness, preying especially on young girls.
One chilling aspect of Mutota’s method was his use of threats, brandishing both guns and knives to intimidate his victims before committing his heinous acts.
In the end, justice prevailed as Mutota’s reign of terror came to a decisive halt with a sentence that reflected the severity of his crimes.
The prosecution successfully demonstrated Mutota’s consistent modus operandi, which targeted vulnerable individuals, particularly young girls, instilling fear through the threat of violence.
However, considering the gravity of the crimes and the vulnerability of the victims, a stricter penalty is warranted,” remarked Mtombeni during sentencing.
