Bulawayo Football Icon Madodana ‘Horsepower’ Tshabangu Passes Away

Former Bulawayo social soccer stalwart Madodana ‘Horsepower’ Tshabangu has passed away. He was in his 60s.

Tshabangu’s son, Maradona, confirmed the news from Johannesburg, South Africa, stating that his father took his last breath at 5:50 PM on Monday. However, he did not disclose the specific medical condition that led to his passing.

Tshabangu was well-known for his role as a center-back for teams like Bulawayo Rockets, Meikles, and Gweru United. He rose to prominence in 1997 when he successfully encouraged the late Nhamo Rusamo to sponsor the inaugural Horsepower Tournament.

This competition featured teams from Bulawayo’s Western Suburbs and became a beloved annual event, offering an end-of-season platform for football enthusiasts in the community. Many players, including Benjani Mwaruwari, gained recognition through the tournament and went on to play for professional clubs.

At one point, Tshabangu oversaw a social soccer league in Bulawayo that boasted affiliation from 78 teams.

Maradona shared that burial arrangements were still being finalized and more details would be available soon. Tshabangu’s death comes shortly after his son had made an appeal to Zimpapers Sports Hub for assistance with his father’s medical expenses. According to the family, doctors in Johannesburg had determined that Tshabangu was too weak to undergo surgery.
