Businessman Evans Katumba Still Missing Despite R1.5M Ransom

Businessman Evans Katumba Still Missing Despite R1.5M Ransom
Zimbabwean entrepreneur Evans Katumba remains missing despite a hefty R1.5 million ransom paid to his captors.
South African authorities are actively investigating his disappearance. Katumba, a longstanding resident in Durban, was abducted on March 24 by armed assailants wielding AK47 rifles at a nightclub he had recently acquired.
Initially, the kidnappers demanded R2.5 million for Katumba’s release. However, his family and associates managed to gather R1.5 million, which was delivered as instructed in Ballito, a coastal town near Durban.
Despite complying with the ransom demand, Katumba’s captors failed to release him as promised, triggering a thorough probe by South African law enforcement, including the Specialized Crime Investigation Unit, known as The Hawks.
The circumstances leading to Katumba’s abduction suggest a targeted operation. His recent acquisition of Yugo nightclub, a venue associated with the late rapper AKA, may have drawn unwanted attention from criminal elements in Durban.
Katumba’s transition from a fuel station worker to a fuel supplier also raised his profile, making him susceptible to such incidents.
Moreover, Katumba had previously encountered danger when he narrowly escaped an attempted hijacking in December.
Following this incident, he received threats and demands for protection money, highlighting the volatile environment he was operating in.
Despite warnings from friends about the need for heightened security measures, Katumba remained steadfast in his approach, opting to handle matters independently. However, the escalating threats and attempts on his life underscore the risks associated with his business ventures in Durban’s underworld.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are working tirelessly to locate Katumba and bring those responsible for his abduction to justice.
