Gibson Hwende, the former chairman of the Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) Chiredzi Town Council, has switched to ZANU PF, claiming that it is pointless to keep resisting President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Hwende revealed his decision during a ZANU PF event on Saturday at Chitsanga Hall in Chiredzi, where he was warmly greeted by the populace after his defection.
Paradoxically, he has previously been a strong opponent of Mnangagwa but has now shown respect for the leader of ZANU PF, calling him a “listening president.”
In August 23, 2023, general elections were held, and Hwende was not selected by the CCC to represent the Chiredzi Central National Assembly Constituency.

Later, he attempted to gain the seat as an independent, but was not successful; Ropafadzo Makumire of the CCC was the winner. At a thank-you rally organized by Jameson Charumbira, the current chairwoman of the Chiredzi Town Council, Hwende’s defection was made public.
After the ceremony, Gibson Hwende told The Mirror that his admiration for Mnangagwa’s style of leadership inspired him to join ZANU PF. He declared:
Mnangagwa is a listening president and he inspired me, I witnessed a lot of developments done by him under a short period of time and it’s madness to keep on opposing good development.
Hwende declared, “I don’t have any bad blood with him, but opposition yadhakwa,” indicating that he had no ill will toward former CCC leader Nelson Chamisa.
On the same day, it was also revealed that Artwell Muzvrwandoga, the head of the Chiredzi Government Primary School Development Committee (SDC), and Shepherd Nyoni, his deputy, would be joining ZANU PF.
