Cephas Munyowani Stabbed to Death Over US$1

In a tragic incident on February 16th, a dispute over a mere US$1 resulted in the fatal stabbing of a Bindura man. Cephas Munyowani, 34, from Masere village, met his untimely demise after being stabbed in the stomach with a kitchen knife by 23-year-old Aleck Joseph Bembenene.

The altercation unfolded at a grinding mill where Cephas Munyowani, accompanied by Gilbert Nzonzera, encountered Bembenene purchasing chicken feed. Bembenene then enlisted their help to transport the feed to his home, promising them US$1 and opaque beer as compensation, to which they agreed.

After completing the task and receiving their payment, the two men later found themselves at Sonata Muchenje’s homestead assisting with well-digging. Bembenene, however, tracked them down and demanded his US$1 back from Munyowani, who firmly refused, asserting that his obligation had been fulfilled.

Tensions escalated as Bembenene confronted Munyowani, leading to a physical altercation. In the heat of the moment, Bembenene fatally stabbed Munyowani in the abdomen with a kitchen knife before fleeing the scene. Despite Munyowani’s desperate attempt to pursue his attacker, he collapsed, his intestines protruding from the grievous wound.

Nzonzera, witnessing the horrifying turn of events, rushed to provide first aid and promptly transported Munyowani to Shamva Hospital. Tragically, Munyowani succumbed to his injuries two days later.

The swift actions of the public led to the apprehension of Bembenene the following day at Nyava Police Base. Mashonaland Central deputy provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Tony Nyandoro, emphasized the importance of respecting the law and seeking proper channels for dispute resolution, urging residents to refrain from resorting to vigilante justice.
