MUNYARADZI CHAURAYA, the guy at the center of a sexual assault case that has enraged the nation, is no stranger to the legal system.
In 2017, the Harare dealer was accused of defrauding a client of US$8,000 in a car purchase and showed up before the Harare Magistrates’ Courts.
However, after he applied for discharge at the conclusion of the State case, which determined the case was weak and without merit, he was exonerated of all charges.
The State was unable to establish that Chauraya cheated Clara Hambury of $8,000 in an automobile transaction.
According to the allegations, on October 5, 2015, Clara called Chauraya and asked to be shown different cars for sale on his Facebook page “Cars for Cash” because she wanted to buy a truck.
However, Chauraya showed up in the same court in June of last year, this time as a complainant after losing R138 000 in a car deal with two people, one of whom was posing as Deputy Health Minister Dr. John Mangwiro.
The State said that on June 16, Chauraya discovered an advertisement in which Governor Chirume, Chirume’s brother, was promoting automobiles and posing as a car dealer in South Africa.
According to reports, Chauraya requested an Isuzu KB300, which Chirume offered to purchase for R138 000, including transportation to the Beitbridge Border Post.
After accepting the arrangement, Chauraya deposited R130,000 the following day into Chirume’s FNB Bank account in South Africa.
Without a car or the necessary funds for the deal, Chauraya filed a police report after no money materialized.
