Chirimutsitu Primary School Hit by Sudden Storm As Students Escape Serious Injury

Twelve students at Chirimutsitu Primary School in Makoni South, Manicaland Province, narrowly escaped serious injury when debris from their classroom roofs fell during a whirlwind last Tuesday.

The strong winds tore off asbestos roofing sheets while classes were in session, prompting students to scatter in search of safety. Unfortunately, twelve learners were struck by the flying debris and sustained various injuries.

George Chidhakwa, the Makoni District Schools Inspector, confirmed the incident to The Manica Post, stating he was away on official duty but had heard about the damage and injuries.

Makoni Rural District Council Ward 18 representative, Councillor Simba Muzariri, explained that the winds affected the school around noon, dislodging roofing sheets from two classrooms and causing damage to three others. A total of five classrooms suffered extensive harm.

While teachers and students were inside, debris caused injuries to twelve students. One student sustained a deep cut to the head and was taken to Rusape General Hospital, where he is in stable condition. The other eleven were treated at Sangano Clinic and released.

An assessment by council officials and an independent contractor estimated repair costs at $4,130. Authorities are appealing for support from well-wishers and development partners to help restore the school.

Muzariri noted that the incident has left students anxious, as they panic whenever strong winds occur, leading to more injuries. He emphasized the need for safety training for both students and teachers to better prepare for such disasters.
