Villagers in Chivi district are turning to an innovative farming technique, the Pfumvudza Crocodile Model, to tackle climate change and boost food security.
Developed by Chivi District Agricultural Extension Officer Forward Masara, the model is tailored for semi-arid areas like Chivi and aims to enhance household-level food production.
Masara emphasized the community-driven aspect of the initiative.
“The Pfumvudza Crocodile Model is set to revolutionize agricultural practices in Zimbabwe. This approach focuses on sustainable farming and is designed to meet the ecological needs of specific regions.
“This model is not one-size-fits-all. It is customized for different ecological zones, with farmers focusing on crops best suited to their environment, including traditional grains and short-season varieties,” said Masara.

What sets this model apart is its focus on both crop and livestock needs. It integrates livestock feed production alongside traditional crop farming, recognizing the vital role animals play in rural economies.
Additionally, Masara noted that the project has already been introduced in 90 villages, in partnership with Chief Chivi.
“I’m working closely with 90 villagers under Chief Chivi’s guidance. We’ve established learning platforms because farmers learn best through hands-on practice. Our goal is to empower villagers to adopt these innovations quickly,” Masara added.
One of the farmers, John Mhare, highlighted that the success of the Pfumvudza Crocodile Model is evident in its ability to increase food security at the household level, sparking interest beyond Chivi.
“There is great potential for this model to spread across the countryside due to its positive outcomes. If farmers can produce despite the challenges of climate change, this approach could resonate not just in Zimbabwe but across the region,” remarkabed Mhare.
As climate change continues to affect agriculture, the Pfumvudza Crocodile Model offers a sustainable solution that could transform farming practices and help secure food for communities throughout Zimbabwe.
