Over 250 cyclists of all ages and fitness levels from many walks of life took part in the Cimas iGO Pedal 2 Wellnes cycling event on Saturday morning, September 21st, in Borrowdale. This cycling effort aims to promote health and wellness while also raising awareness about Zimbabwe’s serious drug and substance misuse problem.
This annual event, which strives to promote a healthier lifestyle and bring communities together in the battle against drug use, featured cyclists riding two separate routes: 42 km and 25 km.
Tapfumaneyi Mugari, the manager of CIMAS Digital/PPR, stated, “We will donate to the Chikurubi psychiatric facility as part of this initiative. We also prioritize social well-being as one of the eight iGO dimensions. This entails merely being in a social situation, going somewhere, and not focusing too much on the different pressures on our lives.”
Participants were divided into three groups: children’s, elite, and social. This encouraged inclusivity and allowed people from all backgrounds to benefit from cycling’s health benefits.
The iGO Pedal 2 Wellness, an annual event, continues the popularity of its predecessor by emphasizing the role that physical activity plays in leading a healthy, balanced lifestyle. The cycling event was a timely reminder of the ways in which sports may be effectively used to address significant social concerns like drug and substance abuse in addition to improving physical health.
The head commissaire for the event was Elton Muchemwa, the head coach of Zimbabwe’s national cycling team. His participation encouraged members to participate at a higher level in the sport and gave the movement legitimacy.
As drug and substance use rates rise in Zimbabwe, community-driven programs like Pedal-2-Wellness become increasingly important. Cimas iGO Pedal 2 wellness demonstrated how biking can be both enjoyable and meaningful by combining social awareness and fitness. This method has the ability to address a major national issue while also promoting healthier communities.
