Congolese National in Court Over Brutal Torture Incident at Pretoria Nightclub

Zanzou Nightclub

A Congolese national arrested in connection with a violent assault and torture incident at Zanzou nightclub in Pretoria has appeared in court, where he was ordered to remain in custody.

The 41-year-old suspect’s name has not been disclosed as an identity parade is still pending.

During his appearance at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday, the case was postponed to March 28. The suspect, who works as a bouncer, did not proceed with his expected bail application but may apply at a later stage.

Authorities have identified another victim linked to the case, and they will also participate in the identity parade.

The accused was arrested last month in Yeoville, Johannesburg, by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD). According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), he faces eight counts of compelled sexual assault and six counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana stated that the alleged assaults date back to April 2022, when two victims were attacked. In a separate incident in January 2023, the suspect reportedly forced four men to perform sexual acts on themselves.

The case gained public attention after shocking videos surfaced online, showing men being stripped naked, tied up, beaten, and forcibly submerged in buckets of water. Some were reportedly forced to insert beer bottles into their private parts.

Following these revelations, three victims, aged 20, 21, and 22, have come forward to file charges. Investigators have indicated that more charges could be added as inquiries continue.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) strongly condemned the incidents shown in the videos, describing them as gross violations of human dignity and bodily integrity.

In response, the commission launched its own investigation and pledged to ensure that law enforcement dedicates sufficient resources to the case.

“As part of our inquiry, we will meet with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to discuss the need for a thorough investigation,” the SAHRC stated. “We encourage victims and witnesses to come forward and provide information.”

The commission also intends to engage with the nightclub’s management regarding their response to the incident and their failure to report it to the authorities.

The suspect was arrested on February 20, 2025, after a tip-off led JMPD officers to his location.
