Dance workshops in demand

Following the rewarding partnership of Jibilika Dance Trust (JDT) and Dance Avenue hosting a successful one day practical Dance Business Workshop (DBW) for local artistes with renowned South African based dancer, choreographer and entrepreneur Mullin Krienke in Harare last week two more workshops will be hosted in a bid to counter the high demand.
DBW’s main objective is to educate Zimbabwean dancers on how they can extend their talent into a business.
The first workshop was held in Harare last week with participants requesting for more similar programs resulting in another program being penciled in for Wednesday at Courtland in Mutare.
According to the schedule scene by Showbiz DBW is paving way for JDT’s annual Jibilika Dance Festival which will be hosted in the eastern border city from August 26 to 27.
JDT projects director, Plot Mhako told Showbiz that they had no option but to give in to pressure from participants.
The free entry workshops will end with a final master class workshop in Harare’s new co working space, B2C Coworking on Friday with the platform open to professional dancers only.
“The workshop is part of our newly established Jibilika Dance Academy aim at empowering dancers and professionalising the trade at the same time giving access to kids in communities to dance and learn,” said Mhako.
Jibilika Dance Academy runs under the banner “Breaking Barriers” and has been hosting free dancing classes in communities every weekend.
The project is still in its infancy but has taken dancing to Dzivarasekwa a high density suburb in Harare and plans are underway to take it to other communities.
The workshop promises to be a life changing one to local dancers who have struggled monetising their craft.
