Mpumalanga police have reported a significant breakthrough following the tragic shooting at Pienaar, which left eight people dead outside a tavern.
The shooting occurred on Saturday at 4 a.m., as confirmed by Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane.
A 39-year-old male suspect was arrested in Pienaar on Sunday night, January 12. During the arrest, authorities seized a pistol with approximately 13 live rounds of ammunition. The suspect is set to appear in court soon, according to Ndubane.
The initial report indicated that six people were killed on the scene, including one woman and five men. Two additional victims, a man and a woman, later died from their injuries in the hospital. Three others, two men and a woman, were hospitalized with gunshot wounds.
At the scene, police found two Volkswagen Polos with bullet holes, one of which contained a deceased victim. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and police continue to investigate the circumstances.

In response to the breakthrough, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, the acting provincial police commissioner, expressed his satisfaction with the progress in the case.
Meanwhile, the Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, Jackie Macie, condemned the violent incident and urged the public to allow police the time and space needed to complete their investigation. He also called for the swift arrest of the perpetrators.
Macie stressed the importance of liquor vendors ensuring the safety of their customers and extended his condolences to the families of the victims while wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.
