Art enthusiasts were treated to an immersive experience at a recent digital art showcase that redefined the boundaries of artistic expression.

Titled Global Digital Art: Walter Benjamin’s Dialogue with Digital Intelligence, the exhibition was hosted at the Ferrari Scuderia showroom at the V&A Waterfront. Organized by Lekker Gallery, the showcase featured works from seven international digital artists alongside a South African representative.

Blending Art and Technology

Lekker Gallery, founded by Cape Town native Damon Crowhurst, aims to bridge the gap between traditional art and digital displays. Crowhurst believes digital art is an evolution of artistic storytelling, offering creators a new medium to express their vision.

“Art has always shaped how we see the world. Digital art adds another layer of depth and resonance to that experience,” Crowhurst explained.

He collaborates with renowned international curator Huang Yi to introduce digital art to broader audiences. Their partnership recently brought digital installations to the prestigious StART art fair in London during Frieze Week in 2024.

According to Crowhurst, Lekker Gallery was created to merge advanced display technology with innovative digital art curation. “Our goal is not just to fill walls with digital screens but to select and present art in a way that enhances the spaces they occupy,” he said.

The Future of Art

Crowhurst sees digital art as a natural progression in the creative world. He envisions a future where art is accessed through subscription-based digital platforms, similar to streaming services for music or podcasts.

“Traditional art will always have its place, but creativity has always been about pushing boundaries,” he added. “Digital art is simply the next chapter in how artists interpret the world.”
