Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla to Face Charges Over 2021 Riots

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla to Face Charges Over 2021 Riots

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, the daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma, will go to court on Thursday. She is accused of helping to start the riots in 2021 that resulted in over 300 deaths.

Her party, uMkhonto WeSizwe (MK), confirmed the news on X, calling on supporters to “mobilise all ground forces to attend in numbers” at the Durban court.

The unrest in 2021 was one of the deadliest events in South Africa since apartheid. It started in KwaZulu-Natal and then spread to Gauteng after Zuma was jailed for ignoring a court order.

The unrest led to a lot of looting, damage to businesses, and major economic losses. President Cyril Ramaphosa called it a “attempted insurrection.”

Zuma-Sambudla, who strongly supports her father, was accused of posting inflammatory messages on social media that supposedly contributed to the riots.

Amid the confusion, she kept sharing messages like “KZN, we see you” with pictures of the destruction.

In a post that has been removed, she is said to have shared a video of someone shooting an automatic rifle at a poster of Ramaphosa.

Although she hasn’t directly addressed the charges, Zuma-Sambudla shared a mysterious message on X that said, “We see you.” She often used this term during the riots.

Authorities have been under fire for a long time to make sure that those responsible for the violence are held accountable.

In 2022, the Hawks said they were not looking into Zuma-Sambudla directly, but her name came up in witness accounts.

She boldly replied on X: “I’m not afraid!” I won’t be scared! I have defeated the dogs, and now their owners are coming out! “We can see you!”

The Jacob Zuma Foundation said that the former president’s children are being targeted.

Meanwhile, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) called the riots a “carefully planned event,” but they did not find any clear connection to Zuma’s arrest.

In 2023, a former security guard was the first person convicted for his involvement in the violent riots and was sentenced to 12 years in jail.

The unrest lasted for several days, causing more than 200 shopping malls to be looted and resulting in over 150,000 job losses.

The economic impact was expected to be in the billions.

Zuma, who stepped down as president in 2018 due to graft claims, is still a controversial person in South African politics.

His party, MK, became a strong player in last year’s elections, getting 15% of the vote and becoming the third-largest political party in the country.

With Zuma-Sambudla now in court, the case is likely to increase political tensions before the national polls.
