Exciting Clashes Await as ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Enters Critical Phase

ICC Men’s T20 World Cup

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup continues to thrill cricket fans as the tournament progresses in the West Indies and the United States. From Tuesday, June 11 to Tuesday, June 18, the competition will see the completion of the group stage, with teams vying for a spot in the prestigious Super 8 phase.

From an African perspective, Uganda’s fairytale appearance at the 2024 T20 World Cup is already
a success in and of itself, but they will be looking to do more than merely make up the numbers
when they face New Zealand in their final Group C match, set for Trinidad and Tobago on the
morning of Saturday 15 June.

“We don’t see ourselves as a big-hitting team,” said Uganda veteran Frank Nsubuga, whose
international career started when he was just 16 back in 1997. “We just want to play as a team,
take it one game at a time and see ourselves growing in the game.”

The 43-year-old added, “It’s been my dream to play at this level. I don’t know for sure if I am
retiring. I’ll see how I’m feeling, how my body is feeling and then I’ll decide. Let me first push, and then I’ll let the world know.”

Namibia, who will face traditional powerhouses Australia and England in Group B matches on
Wednesday 12 and Saturday 15 June respectively, are also looking to grow the game in their
country. Opening batsman Michael van Lingen wants to see cricket spread beyond its stronghold in the capital city Windhoek – and believes a strong showing at this tournament can help do just that.

“I stay at Long Beach and I see a lot of youngsters that have never played cricket and never even
heard of cricket – and they’re now interested in the game. When I’m there, I train in my Namibian kit and that’s how I try and inspire the guys,” said van Lingen.

“Cricket Namibia have got guys going into rural areas. They get the children involved and they get the parents involved. Because cricket is not an older sport like rugby in Namibia, people don’t know cricket. Lots of the parents are a bit sceptical and ask: ‘What is this sport? What’s this bat and ball?’ And then they realise it’s a great sport. It’s grown so much in the last two or three
years.”

Once the group stage of the T20 World Cup is concluded, the Super 8 – which features two groups of four teams each, playing in a round-robin format – will run from Wednesday 19 to Tuesday 25 June, followed by the semifinals and final on Thursday 27 and Saturday 29 June respectively.
