Barcelona secured a spot in the Copa del Rey final after defeating Atletico Madrid 1-0 on Wednesday, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal, advancing 5-4 on aggregate following a dramatic 4-4 draw in the first leg. The win sets up a final showdown with their fierce rivals, Real Madrid.
Barca, the record 31-time Copa del Rey champions, controlled the game at Atletico’s Metropolitano stadium. Atletico Madrid’s season is now in jeopardy, with little left to fight for after their exit from the competition.
In contrast, Barcelona is eyeing a potential quadruple this year, maintaining an unbeaten streak in 2025 and extending their run to 21 games without defeat.
Atletico’s last victory over Barcelona came before Christmas, when they overtook Barca in La Liga. However, they now find themselves nine points behind in the standings with just nine matches to go.
“We can’t relax; we need to stay focused and humble, and good things will come,” said Torres after the match.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid also progressed to the final, edging past Real Sociedad with a 5-4 aggregate victory after a 4-4 draw at the Bernabeu on Tuesday. The final against Barcelona will be an intense and highly anticipated clash.
In the game, Barcelona’s coach, Hansi Flick, made the decision to start winger Raphinha, who was tightly marked by Atletico’s defenders, including a booking for Cesar Azpilicueta after a rough challenge. Lamine Yamal impressed again, setting up Torres for the game-winning goal with a perfectly timed pass. Despite a late surge from Atletico, including a disallowed goal from Alexander Sorloth, Barcelona held on to seal their place in the final.
Flick praised the team’s resilience, especially in the second half. “We played bravely, and while the job isn’t done, we are on the right path,” he said.
Atletico, having already been eliminated from the Champions League by Real Madrid, had hoped to secure a trophy in the Copa del Rey but now face the difficult task of recovering for the remainder of the season. Defender Jose Gimenez acknowledged the disappointment, urging the team to finish the season strong despite the setbacks.
