Former World Champion Charles Manyuchi Impregnates Married Woman

Former world boxing champion and holder of multiple welterweight titles, Charles Manyuchi, has been ordered by the High Court to pay $18,000 in damages after engaging in an affair with a married woman he trained at his gym.

The judgment was issued by Justice Zisengwe at the Masvingo High Court following a default ruling in favor of Tapiwa Munyaka, the woman’s husband.

Munyaka, a regional manager at a microfinance bank, discovered the affair in 2021 after finding explicit photos and videos of his wife, Chengeto Viola Munyaka (née Dimingo), and Manyuchi on her phone. The revelations led to the breakdown of Munyaka’s seven-year marriage.

Munyaka claimed the affair caused him emotional distress, damaged his self-esteem, and exposed him to the risk of sexually transmitted diseases. Court documents revealed that Manyuchi and Chengeto did not use protection, and the affair resulted in a pregnancy that was later terminated.

The gym where Manyuchi trained Chengeto was located at the Flamboyant Hotel in Masvingo. Munyaka had initially supported his wife’s involvement, even allowing her to be part of promotional campaigns for Manyuchi’s boxing matches. Chengeto accompanied Manyuchi’s team to various holiday destinations, including Kariba, under the pretense of promoting sponsors’ products.

“The defendant’s reckless behavior put me at risk of STDs, including HIV,” Munyaka stated in his application. “The pregnancy is evidence of unsafe sex, and I am now left dealing with the emotional and social fallout.”

Manyuchi, a former World Boxing Federation (WBF), Global Boxing Union (GBU), World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver welterweight, and World Alliance Boxing Association (WABA) champion, did not respond to a letter of demand sent in 2022, prompting the court to grant a default judgment.

Initially, Munyaka sought $50,000 in damages, comprising $30,000 for loss of companionship and $20,000 for insult and humiliation. The court awarded $8,000 and $10,000, respectively, making it the highest adultery damages ever awarded by the Masvingo High Court.

Munyaka’s lawyer, Charles Ndlovu of Ndlovu and Hwacha Legal Practitioners, noted that Manyuchi’s lack of response or apology reflected his disregard for the situation’s severity.

The affair came to light towards the end of 2021, shattering Munyaka’s trust. Despite the public nature of the scandal, Manyuchi has made no public comments or gestures of reconciliation regarding the matter.
