Former Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) Radio 2 presenter, Simon Pashoma Ncube, has made a heartfelt plea to businessman Wicknell Chivayo, asking for help to escape his severe financial hardship.
Chivayo, a controversial figure known for his dealings in state tenders and contracts, has recently come under scrutiny, especially for a reported corrupt US$100 million tender from the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) in 2023, which allegedly involved senior government officials and his imprisoned former business partners, Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu.
Ncube, 66, was once a beloved household name at ZBC but has faced his own set of controversies, including allegations of corruption and rape during his career. Now, living in poverty, he has turned to social media to share his struggles. In a video posted on Facebook on November 1, Ncube appealed directly to Chivayo for assistance, revealing that he resides on a plot in Chivhu, Mashonaland East, which he received through the land reform program. However, he has been unable to make use of the land due to a lack of resources.
In his video, Ncube, who is dealing with a disability, expressed his desire to contribute to the success of the Agrarian Reform program but lamented that without financial assistance, his dreams remain unfulfilled. He spoke highly of Chivayo’s charitable work and asked for any help he could provide, citing the alignment of Chivayo’s efforts with the vision of Zimbabwe’s president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, to uplift ordinary citizens.
The video, which has gained significant attention, shows Ncube in a frail condition, struggling to stand with the help of makeshift crutches. His current situation has sparked public outrage, with opposition politician Job Sikhala criticizing the ZANU PF-led government for abandoning pensioners. Sikhala highlighted how individuals like Ncube, who once served the nation, are now left in poverty due to the country’s poor governance and economic policies.

Blessing Masamba, a commentator, pointed out that Ncube’s situation is reflective of a wider issue, where many pensioners have seen their savings wiped out by hyperinflation and currency instability since 2008. Masamba emphasized the need for a stable economy to prevent further suffering among retirees.
