Gang Member Behind Mukuru Money Transfer Robberies Arrested

Mukuru Money Transfer robbery

A suspected member of an armed robbery gang that recently targeted Mukuru Money Transfer agencies around Harare has been arrested.

The suspect has indicated to the court his intention to plead guilty to two robbery charges and an additional charge of illegal possession of explosives found in his vehicle.

The most recent robbery occurred on Saturday in Beatrice. The accused, Clever Chada of Stoneridge, faces seven charges of armed robbery. During his initial court appearance before regional magistrate Tilda Mazhande, Chada was not required to enter a plea but confirmed his plan to admit to three of the charges, including possession of explosives.

According to the allegations, on December 16, Chada and his accomplices targeted the Mukuru Money Transfer booth in Glen View. Arriving in a black Toyota Mark X, the gang confronted employee Tawanda Tagara, who was assisting customers at the time. After firing shots into the air and ordering everyone to the ground, they forced Tagara to open the cash box, stealing US$1,839 and R2,350. Additionally, they robbed a customer, Proud Muchairi, of US$950, his wallet, a defensive driver’s license, and business cards before fleeing.

Four days later, on December 20, the gang allegedly struck the Mukuru booth at Kamunhu Shopping Centre in Mabvuku. Driving an unmarked silver Toyota Sienta, they parked nearby and approached the booth, firing shots into the air.

On January 3, the gang targeted another Mukuru Money Transfer booth, this time at Manyame Complex. Armed and using the same vehicle, they confronted employees Munyaradzi Rusere and Sarafina Banda, demanding money while threatening them. The robbers seized two cash boxes containing US$5,530 and R18,700, along with US$680 and a G-Tel cellphone from an adjacent EcoCash booth. They fired a shot inside the shop before escaping.

The latest robbery took place in Beatrice on Saturday, where the gang targeted another Mukuru Money Transfer booth. After pretending to be customers, one gang member revealed a firearm and demanded access to the cash box. They stole US$3,500, a Samsung A35 cellphone, and two additional phones belonging to Mukuru. Chada was apprehended after authorities received a tip-off. A search of his vehicle uncovered explosives, including Thunder T90 and Emex dynamites, as well as detonator cables, all of which were in his possession without proper authorization.

Prosecutor Anesu Chirenje is handling the case for the State.
