Gokwe Woman (23) Arrested For Selling Her Newborn Baby

A Gokwe-born 23-year-old mother was found guilty of a serious crime—selling her newborn two days after giving birth. In front of a Harare magistrate, she acknowledged breaking the Trafficking in Persons Act. She is currently awaiting punishment.

She first tried to mislead authorities by claiming her child had died soon after birth. But more research revealed an unsettling fact: she had worked with someone else to exchange her child. The prosecution disclosed that on June 26 of the previous year, just after giving birth in Johannesburg, South Africa, she sold her son to an accomplice.

In a terrifying turn of events, the accomplice was able to sneak the baby into Zimbabwe in October. After informing the authorities, the accomplice was apprehended on November 27. The baby was then given up to the Department of Social Welfare.

On December 12, after learning that her accomplice had been arrested, the mother hurried back to Zimbabwe in an effort to retrieve the kid. Her unexpected return and her earlier, untrue report of the child’s death raised suspicions, leading to her imprisonment. Gokwe
