The South African government has announced an extension for the Zimbabwe Exemption Permits (ZEP), allowing holders to remain in the country legally until November 25, 2026.
The decision provides much-needed relief to thousands of Zimbabwean nationals living and working in South Africa under the ZEP program, which has been a critical avenue for employment and residence for Zimbabwean migrants.
In an official notice issued by South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister, Dr. Leon Amos Schreiber, the government confirmed that no holder of a ZEP will face arrest, deportation, or detention for immigration-related issues tied to the validity of their exemption certificates.
This means that ZEP holders will not be subject to the usual immigration enforcement measures under section 34 of South Africa’s Immigration Act due to the expiration of their permits.

The extension has been hailed as a positive step for the Zimbabwean community in South Africa, many of whom have faced uncertainty regarding their legal status. Minister Schreiber emphasized that the decision reflects South Africa’s commitment to supporting Zimbabwean nationals, many of whom have been residing in the country for several years, contributing to the workforce and local communities.
This extension marks an important development for the South African government’s relationship with its Zimbabwean diaspora and ensures that the individuals who have contributed significantly to the economy and society are not unfairly penalized for their immigration status.
