The Gwanda Lithium Mine has successfully completed the construction of its multi-million-dollar processing plant and obtained an export permit from the government, enabling it to begin shipping lithium concentrate to China. This milestone was confirmed by Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando during a recent parliamentary session.
This development is part of a broader trend of substantial investments in Zimbabwe’s lithium sector, driven by increasing global demand for this essential mineral, particularly for use in electric vehicles and energy storage solutions. Significant investments from Chinese companies have been notable, including a $300 million spodumene processing plant at Bikita Lithium Mine and another $300 million lithium concentrator at the Arcadia project near Harare.
Minister Chitando highlighted that Gwanda Lithium Mine has been producing approximately 1,500 tonnes of lithium concentrate daily since it began operations in January 2024. The mine has been granted a six-month export license for a trial shipment of 5,000 tonnes to China, aimed at establishing reliable international markets.
The project, which employs 300 people—80% of whom are local—has a projected annual output of one million tonnes of ore and 200,000 tonnes of lithium concentrate at full capacity. Gwanda is a subsidiary of Chinese firm Tsingshan Holdings Limited Group, which has made significant investments in Zimbabwe, including a $1.5 billion iron and steel plant.
Additionally, Minister Chitando provided an update on mining activities in the Boterekwa area, noting two companies, Chenxi Mining Company and Saironi Mining Company, engaged in various mining operations. These developments reflect a growing trend of diversification in Zimbabwe’s mining sector, supported by government policies that foster investment in modern processing technologies to enhance production and export quality.
