Harare City Council’s acting town clerk, Phakhamile Mabhena Moyo, has assured residents that the municipal water supply is completely safe for consumption, emphasizing that it undergoes rigorous hourly testing and complies with World Health Organization (WHO) standards.
Concerns over water quality in Harare have persisted for years, primarily due to untreated sewage being discharged into the Mukuvisi River, which ultimately feeds into Lake Chivero, the city’s primary water source.

During a recent visit to the city’s water and sewage treatment facilities, Engineer Moyo sought to reassure the public about the safety of the water supply.
“If there are any tap water issues, they are likely localized. The water processed at Morton Jaffray Water Works meets WHO standards in full,” he stated.
He further highlighted that Harare’s water undergoes laboratory testing every hour and that results are regularly verified by the Standards Association of Zimbabwe. “I can confidently say that the water leaving Morton Jaffray is completely safe for drinking,” he added.
