Heart-Wrenching Ceremony Takes Life of 10-Year-Old in River Cleansing Tragedy
A somber atmosphere enveloped the Muviri family when 66-year-old Senzakupi Nyoni returned home alone, cradling the lifeless body of her 10-year-old grandson following a cleansing ritual at Ngezi River.
The heart-wrenching incident unfolded on the evening of January 19, 2024, sending shockwaves through the close-knit community. Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, spokesperson for Midlands Province Police, confirmed the tragic occurrence to The Midweek Watch.

According to Inspector Mahoko, the distressing event transpired around 5:30 pm while Nyoni was at home with her 36-year-old daughter, Svetukai Muruviri, and her two juvenile grandsons. The elder grandson abruptly entered a trance-like state, expressing concern that his younger brother, 10-year-old Ropafadzo Tunhai, was under the influence of malevolent spirits.
Insisting that a two-hour water cleansing ritual was the only solution, the concerned grandmother, Nyoni, decided to accompany Ropafadzo to Ngezi River, located approximately 500 meters from their residence.
Tragedy unfolded around 8:00 pm when Nyoni returned alone, cradling the lifeless body of Ropafadzo Tunhai. Nyoni handed the lifeless body to Ropafadzo’s distraught mother, Muruviri, who, in turn, reported the devastating incident to the village head, Moses Msipa, on January 20, 2024.
Promptly responding to the report, the police arrived at the scene. Ropafadzo Tunhai’s lifeless body was then transported to Zvishavane District Hospital mortuary for further examination and investigation.
Nyoni, believed to be responsible for the tragic incident, is currently in police custody. Inspector Mahoko urged the public to uphold the sanctity of life and refrain from activities that endanger the lives of others.
