Six people are feared to have lost their lives after a Honda Fit veered off the road and plunged into a disused chrome pit filled with water in the Gakaka area of Shurugwi South last night.
The vehicle, which was traveling from Shurugwi to Zvishavane, reportedly lost control before crashing into the pit.
Shurugwi District Development Coordinator, Rome Shangwa, confirmed the tragic incident, stating that search and rescue operations were ongoing.

“Sub-aqua teams are currently at the scene conducting search operations. The vehicle fell into an abandoned mining pit near the road, and six individuals are feared dead. Investigations are still underway to establish more details,” said Shangwa.
The presence of unsecured mining pits has long been a safety hazard in the area, with residents urging authorities to take action. Earlier this year, a woman from Shurugwi lost her two young children after they drowned in a similar pit.
Midlands police spokesperson, Emmanuel Mahoko, mentioned that law enforcement had not yet received an official report regarding the latest incident.
“We are still gathering details and awaiting an official report from the relevant police station,” Mahoko stated.
