Husband Accused of Abandoning Family for Lavish Lifestyle, Ordered to Pay Maintenance
A Harare woman, Blessing Maphosa, sought financial support from her estranged husband, Cosmas Chinyerere, alleging that he abandoned her and their nine-month-old baby to live a lavish life with another woman.
During the court appearance before magistrate Ayanda Dlamini, Maphosa claimed US$200 in maintenance from Chinyerere. She asserted that he had ceased providing support for her and the baby while residing with another woman in Mabelreign, Harare, instead of their shared residence in Ruwa.
“He is a civil servant and he had the tendency of not coming back home whenever he gets paid. For the past three months, he has stopped coming back home and decided to live at our other matrimonial property in Mabelreign with his mistress,” Maphosa explained to the court.
Chinyerere refuted the allegations, contending that he could not afford the requested amount and proposed a monthly payment of US$30. He further claimed that the couple was still residing together.
“I will give her US$30 because maybe what she wants is pocket money. I give her US$100 monthly for our groceries, and I only sleep over in Mabelreign on days that I finish work late,” Chinyerere stated in his defense.
Magistrate Dlamini ruled in favor of Maphosa, ordering Chinyerere to pay US$100 as maintenance.
