In Harare’s competitive hospitality scene, one hotel has adapted to changing times while preserving its legacy. The Monomotapa Hotel, an iconic landmark since 1974, has undergone a stunning transformation, blending its rich history with modern flair.
Designed by Roy Densem, the hotel’s unique crescent-shaped frontage overlooks Harare Gardens, offering breath taking views of the city.
Originally managed by Southern Sun Hotel Corporation, the hotel changed hands several times, with Meikles Southern Sun, Zimbabwe Sun Limited, and currently, African Suns Limited, at the helm. “We’re proud to be part of the hotel’s journey,” says African Suns Limited’s spokesperson.

In its heyday, the hotel hosted popular spots like Prospectors, Bali Hai, and The Homestead. Le Francais, a renowned restaurant, relocated to the hotel in the early 2000s, further solidifying its reputation as a culinary hub. “Le Francais brought a new level of sophistication to our dining scene,” notes a long time guest.
The hotel underwent significant renovations in 1997, marking a new era in its history. As part of this transformation, it was rebranded as Crowne Plaza Monomotapa, signaling a shift towards modernization and international standards. However, in a nod to its rich heritage, the hotel has since reverted to its original name, embracing its legacy and the nostalgia it evokes in longtime guests and locals alike. “We wanted to honor our past while embracing the future,” explains the hotel’s general manager.
In 2015, the hotel’s management was franchised to Legacy Hotels of South Africa, but this partnership was terminated in 2019, allowing the hotel to return to its roots.
Recent enhancements include free parking, high speed internet, a fitness center, and a pool. Families enjoy children’s activities and kid friendly services. Business travelers appreciate airport transportation and a business center.
Guest rooms feature air conditioning, room service, safes, refrigerators, and Digital display. Room types include non-smoking rooms, suites, family rooms, and smoking rooms.
Looking ahead, the Monomotapa Hotel is expected to continue its evolution, with plans for further enhancements in the upcoming years. While details are yet to be confirmed, it’s anticipated that the hotel may undergo upgrades to its conference facilities, potentially introducing state of the art audio visual equipment and increasing capacity.
Additionally, rumors of a new rooftop bar offering stunning views of Harare have been circulating, possibly featuring live music and themed nights. The hotel may also host special events, including a wine tasting evening and a Christmas themed dinner, showcasing local vineyards and traditional cuisine. However, these plans are subject to change, and the hotel has yet to make an official announcement.
The Monomotapa Hotel remains a beloved Harare landmark, symbolizing the city’s warm hospitality and rich cultural heritage.
