Jones, best known for playing Darth Vader in the Star Wars movie, brought the famous villain to life with his deep, powerful voice. His booming delivery also immortalized Mufasa in Disney’s The Lion King, establishing him as a cultural figure with a voice that millions recognized instantly. In 1988, he starred in Coming to America as King Jaffe Joffer alongside Eddie Murphy and Robin Givens.
Jones won multiple awards over his career, including two Emmys, a Golden Globe, and a Grammy. His contributions to the arts have been recognized with the National Medal of Arts and Kennedy Center Honor. In 2011, he was granted an honorary Academy Award.
Jones was born in Mississippi in 1931 and overcame a childhood stutter to become one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed actors. He won his first Tony Award for his portrayal in The Great White Hope, followed by a second for his performance in Fences.
