Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program 2024 (Window 1) for Nationals of Developing Countries
Applications are currently open for the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) for the year 2024.
The JJ/WBGSP is designed for citizens of specific developing countries with relevant professional experience and a track record of contributing to their countries’ development. This program targets individuals applying to master’s degree programs in development-related fields. It covers 52 Participating Master’s Programs across 27 universities in the U.S., Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Japan, focusing on key areas such as economic policy management, tax policy, and infrastructure management.
It’s crucial to note that eligibility for the JJ/WBGSP Scholarship in 2024 is limited to those admitted to one of the 52 Participating Master’s Programs.
Eligibility Requirements:
To be eligible for the JJ/WBGSP Scholarship, applicants from developing countries must:
- Be a national of a World Bank member developing country (refer to the list on the official website).
- Not hold dual citizenship of any developed country.
- Be in good health.
- Possess a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) earned at least 3 years before the Application Deadline.
- Be employed in a paid full-time position in development-related work at the time of submitting the scholarship application, with a minimum of 3 years of paid development-related employment since obtaining a bachelor’s degree.
Additionally, applicants must be unconditionally admitted to one of the JJ/WBGSP participating master’s programs located outside their country of citizenship and residence.
Scholarship Benefits:
The JJ/WBGSP scholarship provides the following benefits:
- Economy class air travel between the home country and the host university at the start and end of the study program, along with a US $500 travel allowance for each trip.
- Tuition for the graduate program and basic medical insurance through the university.
- Monthly subsistence allowance to cover living expenses while on campus during the scholarship period.
It’s important to note that all JJ/WBGSP scholarships cover the duration of the graduate program or two years, whichever is less.

The scholarship does not cover:
- Visa application costs.
- Expenses for scholars’ family members.
- Extra-curricular courses, training, or non-credit courses.
- Language training not provided by the graduate program.
- Additional travel during the study program.
- Expenses related to research, supplementary materials, field trips, workshops, seminars, or internships.
- Educational equipment such as computers.
- Resident permit fees.
How to Apply:
Interested applicants must submit one completed online application through the online portal by the application deadline, which is February 29, 2024 (for Window 1 programs only). The application should include two recommendation letters and a completed Application Form, written in either English or the language of the master’s degree program. The Application Form should include necessary documentation proving eligibility, the applicant’s Bachelor’s degree diploma, C.V., and an unconditional Letter of Admission to the participating master’s program.
