Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has dismissed recent comments by South African-born US billionaire Elon Musk, who called for him to be declared an international criminal. Malema responded strongly, telling Musk to “go to hell” following Musk’s remarks on X, where he shared old footage of Malema making controversial statements regarding race.
Musk also urged for immediate sanctions against Malema, calling for the former ANC Youth League leader to face global condemnation. In response, Malema tweeted:
“I really think you have entirely lost your left brain: a typical spoiled brat and direct beneficiary of Apartheid whiteness.
“I know black people look the same to you, typical racist. Look closer, and you will realise those are two different people. America is exposing us to its stupidity. I don’t care about your sanctions; I will never stop fighting for black people to be equal to white people, and if that makes me an international criminal, I am proud to be one.”
Heightened Tensions Between the US and South Africa
Musk and former US President Donald Trump have increased pressure on South Africa in the wake of President Cyril Ramaphosa signing the Expropriation Act into law. Trump recently issued executive orders cutting USAID funding for HIV/AIDS programs in South Africa and granting white Afrikaners priority status in the US refugee program.
In response to the growing diplomatic rift, the EFF has urged the South African government to strengthen relations with BRICS partners amid what it calls hostility from the US. The party argues that Trump’s administration is retaliating against South Africa’s decision to take Israel to the International Court of Justice in defense of Palestine.
EFF Rejects Musk’s Influence
EFF spokesperson Sinawo Thambo dismissed Musk’s statements, describing him as a “global billionaire maniac” whose vast wealth has given him a false sense of control over global affairs.
“The EFF tells Elon Musk and his allies—whether in the USA, Israel, or right-wing factions in South Africa—to collectively go to hell,” Thambo stated.
He reaffirmed the party’s position that true equality in South Africa depends on the return of land to African people, a goal to be achieved through expropriation without compensation.

Starlink’s Future in South Africa
The EFF has also vowed that Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service will not operate in South Africa unless it complies with local regulations, which require 30% local ownership.
“The offense Musk has committed against the EFF leader constitutes interference in our domestic affairs. We do not take this lightly. He is acting as an imperialist, attempting to undermine South Africa’s economic and political sovereignty through sanctions and diplomatic coercion.”
EFF Declares Musk an Adversary
The EFF has formally declared Musk an enemy of South Africa, accusing him of influencing the US government for his business interests. The party calls on Russia, China, India, and African states to distance themselves from Musk’s enterprises.

Julius Malema Responds to Elon Musk’s Criticism
“Elon Musk has captured the US presidency and is using his power to advance his personal business interests globally,” Thambo said.
“The EFF will not back down or retreat from its commitment to confronting imperialism and its agents, including Elon Musk, wherever they emerge.”
Meanwhile, Afriforum, a South African civil rights group, has rejected Trump’s offer to provide refugee status for white Afrikaners. The organization has instead sought a meeting with President Ramaphosa to address concerns over the Expropriation Act and other policies, such as the Basic Education Laws Amendment Act.
