Former Zanu PF Member of Parliament for Chivhu South, Killer Zivhu, has expressed sympathy for a young mother who recently made headlines after assaulting her 10-month-old baby. While condemning her actions, Zivhu attributed her behavior to the devastating impact of poverty and frustration.
In a statement, Zivhu stressed that the solution lies not in punitive measures but in addressing the root causes of her behavior.
He argued that counseling and emotional support are essential to rehabilitate the mother rather than resorting to imprisonment, which would separate her from her child and cause further suffering.
“I do not condone what the mother did,” Zivhu clarified. “However, her behavior is a reflection of the frustration that comes with extreme poverty. She does not need prison — she needs counseling to help her become a better parent and find stability in her life.”
As part of his efforts to assist the mother in rebuilding her life, Zivhu announced that he would offer her US$2,500. The funds, he explained, are meant to give her a fresh start, helping her establish a livelihood and create a more stable environment for her and her child.
Zivhu’s approach highlights the importance of tackling the socio-economic challenges faced by many struggling parents in Zimbabwe. He emphasized that incarcerating the mother would only exacerbate the situation by depriving the child of maternal care and potentially worsening the cycle of poverty and neglect.
