Celebrity Beauty Secret: Kim Kardashian’s ‘Salmon Sperm Injections’ Explained

Many celebrities are highly focused on maintaining their appearance and are eager to explore various methods to slow the aging process. Media mogul and entrepreneur Kim Kardashian, renowned for her beauty, is known for popularizing new skincare trends.

One such trend is the use of polynucleotide injections, often referred to as “salmon sperm injections.”

Dr. Phillip Kuan, a quadruple board-certified physician, describes the procedure as similar to dermal fillers or hyaluronic acid injections, originating from the broader trend of using marine-based ingredients in skincare. He notes, “While still somewhat niche, treatments embraced by celebrities like Kardashian and Jennifer Aniston have played a key role in making them more mainstream.”

This treatment involves injecting a DNA extract from salmon sperm into the skin for anti-aging purposes. According to Dr. Kuan, the DNA in salmon sperm is believed to have regenerative properties, which can help improve skin texture and give a more youthful look. It is also thought to stimulate collagen production, a protein that naturally declines with age, helping to increase skin firmness and reduce wrinkles.

“Much like hyaluronic acid injections, polynucleotide injections are said to help the skin retain moisture, giving it a fresher and more vibrant appearance,” Dr. Kuan explains.

However, as this treatment is relatively new, with less than a decade of use, there is limited scientific research on its long-term effects. “Much of the evidence supporting these injections is anecdotal, based on reports from aestheticians and clinics, rather than comprehensive scientific studies,” Dr. Kuan adds.

For those considering alternatives, he suggests dermal fillers, such as hyaluronic acid, which can retain a significant amount of moisture—up to 1,000 times its weight in water—making it a viable option for improving skin texture and appearance.
