King Mswati has made the decision to wed Nomcebo, the daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma, for which he has promised to pay R2 million and a herd of 100 cattle as dowry.

It was previously unknown that the King intended to wed his former friend’s daughter, but last week he revealed her as his liphovela, or official girlfriend, making her first public appearance in eSwatini alongside one of the monarch’s 15 wives. The decision has caused a rift in the royal household, as his wives are purportedly unhappy about the idea of welcoming Zuma’s daughter into their fold.

However, this has done little to dissuade the would-be bride’s mother, Nonkululeko Hloniphile Mhlongo, also known as MaMhlongo, for pushing for the lucrative union.

“MaMhlongo’s eyes are on the lobola price, which is reportedly to be six figures and about 100 cattle,” a member of the Zuma family, who spoke to Sunday World on condition of anonymity said.

Nomcebo, the 21-year-old daughter of Jacob Zuma, made her first public appearance in eSwatini last Monday amid rumors of a R2-million lobola from King Mswati III on the table.

Nomcebo was spotted at the launch of an R50 million chicken project in the kingdom with Siphelele Mashwama, the king’s fifteenth wife, both dressed in eSwatini regalia.

In September 2017, King Mswati III wedded Mashwama. She was his chosen spouse for the occasion and went with him to Zulu King MisuZulu kaZwelithini’s coronation in October 2022.

While Zuma, the former president of South Africa and leader of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, has six marriages, the 56-year-old head of the continent’s only absolute monarchy has 15 wives and 36 children.

Zuma and Nonkululeko Hloniphile Mhlongo (MaMhlongo) are the parents of Nomcebo. Even though MaMhlongo and Zuma have two children together, they are not legally wed.

Rumor has it that Nomcebo attracted the king’s attention at last year’s Somhlolo National Stadium event, which doubled as the nation’s 55th Independence Day anniversary and his birthday.
