The South African Border Management Authority (BMA) has arrested a minibus driver who was reportedly attempting to smuggle undocumented Zimbabwean children into the country at the Beitbridge border.
According to BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi, the driver was apprehended on Monday while transporting 25 undocumented individuals, including 20 children aged 5 to 14. The children were being moved under unsafe and inhumane conditions.
The minibus was seized, and the driver was charged and remains in police custody. A fine of R375,000 was imposed for violating the Immigration Act. In line with established procedures, the children were handed over to Zimbabwean child welfare authorities for their protection while investigations continue.
