La Liga to feature a Catalan Derby

La Liga to feature a Catalan Derby

Barcelona's Raphinha

Matchday five of the 2024-25 La Liga season will feature a Catalan derby between Girona and  Barcelona, while Real Madrid will face a test away to Real Sociedad.

Girona, who had a fantastic season in 2023-24, will be seeking to maintain their supremacy over Barcelona: the Blanquivermells triumphed 4-2 away and at home in their two La Liga meetings against the Blaugrana last season.

In actuality, the result of the second match, which would be played at the Municipal de Montilivi Stadium in May 2024, formally dethroned Barcelona as league champions, delivering the  championship to Real Madrid.

Some’revenge’ will be in order for the Catalan heavyweights, who have had a good start to the season under Hansi Flick and will be eager to build on that momentum immediately following the   international break.

“We have had a different rhythm since the pre-season, and it has been important to have Pedri in midfield – he allows us to play in a different way because of his use of the ball,” commented Flick. “However, there is still so much we need to work on and better. The players have a positive      mentality in this regard, and I am confident about the team’s fortunes.”

Real Madrid, the reigning champions, have also showed glimpses of their incredible potential, but they will need to step up a gear or two for the task of playing away in the Basque country against Imanol Alguacil’s well-drilled Real Sociedad.

Real Sociedad’s Brais Mendez

“I expect a strong Madrid, regardless of who is on the field, since they have a fantastic group. “They’ve consistently demonstrated their quality,” stated Alguacil. “To be honest, what others do means the least to me. What matters is our own performance. Madrid is a big club; regardless of the conditions, they always try to win.”

This round of La Liga action will also feature a potential thriller between Atletico Madrid and Valencia in the Spanish capital; Mallorca will look to defeat Villarreal at the Palma de Mallorca Stadium; and Sevilla will hope to take all three points when they host Getafe at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.
