A police officer was fatally shot in Bulawayo after stopping a group of five men and asking them to identify themselves.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, causing shock and distress within the community.
Sergeant Abel Masava, stationed at Tshabalala Police Station, was responding to a domestic violence call when he encountered the suspects. While standing next to his police vehicle and in full uniform, he approached the group of men.
According to an internal police memo obtained by ZimLive, Masava asked the men where they were coming from and requested their identification. Instead of complying, one of the men pulled out a gun and shot him at point-blank range.
The police report stated, “One of them pointed a firearm and shot Sergeant Masava in the head… He was rushed to United Bulawayo Hospitals where he was confirmed dead on arrival.”
The shooting occurred while Masava was stationed outside a house in Sizinda, where he had accompanied another officer to address a domestic violence incident.

His colleague, the victim, and a friend had entered the house to mediate the situation, leaving Masava outside, keeping watch.
Soon after, five men dressed in dark clothing approached Masava, and his suspicion led him to stop them for questioning. As he requested identification, one of the men fired at him, hitting him in the head.
The second officer, the domestic violence victim, and her friend were still inside the house when they heard the gunshot.
They quickly rushed outside but found Masava lying on the ground, motionless, with a gunshot wound to the head.
Despite efforts to save him, Masava was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The murder of Sergeant Masava follows another tragic incident in Bulawayo earlier this month. On March 6, detective Cassandra Hove was shot and killed in Pumula South, with the shooter later charged for her death.
The bullet meant for an armed robbery suspect struck Hove instead.
The police have launched a manhunt for the suspects responsible for Masava’s death, urging the public to come forward with any information. Authorities have warned that the suspects are armed and dangerous.
Residents in the affected areas have expressed shock and concern, with some calling for more police presence and protective measures for officers on duty.
As investigations continue, the police are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
