VICE President Constantino Chiwenga’s estranged wife Marry Mubaiwa who was convicted on Wednesday for violating the Marriages Act after lying that her former husband had consented to solemnise their wedding while he was receiving medical care in India has been sentenced to one year imprisonment.
She however escaped a custodial sentence after the magistrate ruled she was not in good health to go to jail. She was given an option to pay ZW$60 000 or go to jail for six months.
Mubaiwa, who has been unwell but took time to attend the sentencing before Harare Magistrate Lazini Ncube, will not serve jail term after getting a wholly suspended one year sentence.
“The accused will not cause harm to society. She deserves a second chance. Community service for her won’t work because of her health,” said the magistrate.
The Magistrate also said Mubaiwa would be unable to do community service due to ill-health.
Mubaiwa has been embroiled in a nasty legal battle with her powerful husband, a former army commander and is still before the dock on issues of externalisation where the country and Zanu PF Vice President is the complainant.

At least 18 pupils and one teacher have died in flooding in KwaZulu-Natal, said Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga. Schools have been closed until next week, with around 120 schools reporting damage.
The department is currently completing an assessment of damage to schools in the province.
“This a catastrophe and the damage is unprecedented. What is even more worrying is that more rain is expected in the same areas that are already affected,” said Motshekga.
