The government has announced plans to rebuild the Mbare Traders Market to support approximately 10,000 traders after a devastating fire destroyed the facility on the night of October 9, 2024.
At a media briefing following a Cabinet meeting in Harare on October 29, Information, Media, and Broadcasting Services Minister Jenfan Muswere noted that the fire had directly affected 4,695 traders.
To assist those impacted, the government has formulated a response plan aimed at helping traders restock their businesses, which will include loans, grants, and other forms of financial support. Muswere explained:
“The government will take several steps, including immediate relief efforts such as cash transfers, school fee payments, and psychosocial support.
We will also focus on reviving businesses through loans and grants, providing alternative workspaces—such as an open area opposite Carter House during the reconstruction—and implementing economic empowerment programs to assist stakeholders in rebuilding and promoting stability.
Additionally, we will enhance market infrastructure by introducing multi-story buildings and improving emergency response systems to prevent future fire incidents.”

Construction of the new market is expected to take seven months, starting in November 2024, and will pilot the Smart Market concept. This initiative aims to improve the trading environment by providing safe and modern facilities.
