Minister Mutsvangwa: Menstrual Health Is a Right, Not a Privilege

The Government has empowered over 2 500 women and girls countrywide through the local production of reusable sanitary pads, as part of its commitment to menstrual health and hygiene.

The initiative is in line with national vision 2030 where every woman and girl will dignified menstrual care.

In an interview with this publication Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Monica Mutsvagwa said they launched a nationwide capacity building intiative focused on empowering women and girls through the local production of reusable pads.

“To date, over 2 500 women and girls across various regions of the country have been trained through partnerships between the Ministry and supporting organisations.

“The training remains ongoing, with efforts underway to expand its reach to undeserved communities.

“The program is a key strategy in combing period poverty and ensuring that every woman and girl has access to affordable and environmentally friendly menstrual care,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.

The Ministry’s initiative, is not an intervention agenda but also equips beneficiaries with practical skills that can support livelihoods.

She said the Ministry is also on massive drive to raise awareness and advocate for menstrual as a fundamental human right.

Minister Mustangwa said her team commemorated the Menstrual Health Day on 28 May 2025 under the banner of ending period poverty and promoting dignity for all.

“The event drew participation from over 15 primary and secondary schools, whose learners received sanitary pads procured through support from the national treasury and various development partners.

“The day featured awareness campaigns, engagement activities and powerful calls to action, reinforcing the government’s commitment to ensuring accessible menstrual health resources for all women and girls,” she said.

Minister Mutsvagwa said her ministry works other relevant government departments in advancing menstrual health and hygiene.

“The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Health and Hygiene was established in the previous year under the leadership under the Ministry of Women Affairs.

“The Committee comprises representatives at from the Ministries of Health and Child Care, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational training, Finance and Primary and Secondary Education.

“The committee serves as a platform for collaboration among key government ministries to strategise and implement sustainable interventions for the provision of sanitary wear and menstrual health support.

“The committee convenes to deliberate on coordinated approaches that enhance menstrual health outcomes, ensure the dignity of girls and women and promote their participation in education and broader socio-economic life,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.
