The penultimate show of Nigerian Idol Season 9, which took place on Sunday, July 7, 2024, did not disappoint after keeping us glued to our television screens for the previous eleven weeks. The live show was amazing to watch, with surprising twists from the judge’s choice performances to the top four artists going beyond their comfort zones with their sounds.
Contestants chose songs from a list provided by the judges to start the evening. The exciting twist was revealed by host IK Osakioduwa, who said that the judge who selected the most songs would receive a special prize. Judges Omawumi, Hassani, and 9ice were all excited about the prospect of winning.
First up was Chioma, who won over everyone with her performance of “Kuchi Kuchi,” a song selected by Ric Hassani, by J’odie. The judges couldn’t help but dance after her incredible performance. “You did something with her song that Jodie would be proud of,” said Omawumi.
Next was Lammy, who gave a fantastic rendition of 2Baba’s “African Queen,” which 9ice had picked. This performance has been dubbed his best yet because of his amazing stage presence and audience connection! “He made the song his own,” as Omawumi put it.
Omawumi herself selected the song “If You Ask Me,” which Mira Clear performed with great intensity. Omawumi was very impressed by her powerful voice and lively facial expressions, which were the highlights of the evening.
Chima broke the tie by performing Darey Art Alade’s “Not The Girl,” which Ric Hassani chose. His smooth R&B/Soul performance wowed everyone, including the judges. It was R&B/Soul perfection, with Chima making the song his own. Sitting suavely on stage, commanding the attention of everyone present, and making the judges sit and stand in amazement.
As the show progressed, it was time for the eviction. IK had previously stated that this week would be a double elimination, increasing the tension in the room. The audience, contestants, and their families, who were brought on stage, eagerly awaited the results. It was also revealed that Ric Hassani, as the winning judge, had the power to save one of the bottom two contestants or eliminate both.
After 40 million votes, Chima and Lammy were announced as finalists. This put Mira Clear and Chioma in the bottom two, with one of them potentially going home. Ric Hassani, faced with the difficult decision of saving one or both, ultimately chose to save Chioma, resulting in Mira Clear’s departure.
The second round of performances featured the top three contestants in their final push to win votes before the finale next Sunday. The incredible 121 Selah contributed their voices to harmonize with the top three, adding an extra layer of pizazz to their performances. 121Selah, a dynamic Nigerian vocal ensemble, combines Christian faith with engaging music and storytelling.
Chima began with a soulful rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “As,” enrapturing the audience with his smooth vocals. Lammy then delivered a powerful performance of Alexandra Burke’s “Hallelujah,” which earned him a standing ovation. Chioma’s performance demonstrated the significance of Ric Hassani’s save in her competition journey, catapulting her to a formidable top-three contender. Her cover of Jennifer Hudson’s ‘One Night Only’ impressed 9ice, who praised her interpretation and the contrast she added to the song.
The night concluded with 121Selah performing their original single “Let Me In” before joining Mira Clear for her final performance on the Idol stage, which was “Next To Me” by Emeli Sandé.
