Mujejeje 04 ~ Santiago Mostyn & Tawanda Appiah
| Santiago Mostyn makes films, installations and performances that test the divide between disparate cultural spheres, employing an intuitive process to engage with a knowledge and history grounded equally in the body and the rational mind. Mostyn co-curated Moderna Exhibition 2018: With the Future Behind Us, Moderna Museet’s survey of contemporary art in Sweden, and has exhibited widely in museums and biennials, including Luleå Biennial (2020); 12th Rencontres de Bamako (2019); and Gothenburg Biennial (2017). He is based in Sweden but maintains strong ties to Zimbabwe and Trinidad & Tobago, the countries of his upbringing. Tawanda Appiah is an independent curator, researcher and writer based in Sweden. He is currently co-curating the GIBCA Extended exhibition 2021 and recent projects include, in(visible) – abstractions and fragments of queerness (Malmö Konstmuseum, 2021); To Where Are We Beautifully Going? (2020); and On Practices (Malmö Konsthall and Skånes konstförening, 2019). He previously worked as a co-curator at Skånes konstförening and Curator of Education at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. The iconoclastic literature of Dambudzo Marechera burns the path for this conversation between Mostyn and Appiah, navigating his words and life, they contemplate alienation, in-betweenness and multiplicity. As they move between worlds, they weave a tapestry of transnational connection, shaped by the interplay between rhythm, the body, force and movement across Zimbabwe, Bamako, Trinidad & Tobago, US and Sweden. Finally, they journey off-planet, as Mostyn shares work in progress, a gong formed from meteorite iron and how it speaks to the steelpan, amplifying celestial resonances of earthbound sound |
