Muzungu Fined a Beast, Three Goats, and US$90 for Affair with Friend’s Wife

An unruly relationship resulted in a huge court summons for an Makoni villager Evidence Muzungu, who was found guilty of being in a connection with his second-best friend’s wife.

The incident took place at the Makoni community court in which Titus Mulangani, the aggrieved husband, brought Muzungu into court following spotting the man in a his bed with his wife Definite, just a few weeks after he was warned about his conduct.

Mulangani was suspicious about Muzungu’s regular visits his house during his absence and had warned him following the discovery of texts and phone calls from Muzungu to his former partner, Patience. The situation deteriorated when Mulangani returned without notice on Dec. 28, 2024 to discover Muzungu and Definite locked in the home and engaged in intimate relationships.

In the courtroom, Mulangani explained how Muzungu tried to pay for his loss by sacrificing two animals after being taken into custody and subsequently had the village head to suggest against settling for the animals and prompted him to seek an official settlement. Muzungu has, however, denied any wrongdoing and claimed that he was manipulated to get his way by Mulangani as well as Definite.

Despite his argument the court decided against Muzungu and ordered the former president to compensate Mulangani with a single animal along with three goats. Furthermore, Muzungu was instructed to pay the US$90 cost of Mulangani’s lawsuit and set a date to pay the full amount to be set for May 30th 2025.

Definite who was carrying one child when she was pregnant, acknowledged to being in a relation with Muzungu and also confirmed that they had their first meeting. Her testimony, as well as testimony from witnesses, left no space for doubt in the judge’s decision.

Muzungu’s wife Mary who tried to defend her husband’s case by claiming that he was put in a position to be manipulated, failed to persuade the court who found that his actions were incontrovertible. The court also stated that there was no evidence that would support the claim of innocence.

The case highlights the complexity of trust and relationships in close-knit communities which is where personal issues often get thrown into public discussions. The court’s decision is a step in the right direction we hope that both parties will reach peace, and that the village can carry on efforts to preserve harmony.

Muzungu’s settlement agreement, which includes the goats, beasts and lawsuit fees, acts as an example of consequences of breaking relationships and boundaries between marriages.
