Birthday boy Percy Nehoreka Nhara, the founder of Afro fusion band Nehoreka says he owes his musical success to his mentor Man Soul Jah.
Speaking to Showbiz yesterday ahead of his birthday celebrations to be held at Jazz 24/7 tonight the musician retraced his musical roots and conceded that Man Soul Jah was his musical godfather.
“I was groomed in a family band known as Man Soul Jah and the Pace.
I was the keyboardist and the same band was the stepping stone of Gijima Musopero of Hotta Fya, Gift Amuli and many more,” narrated Nhara.
He then left and formed Nehoreka inspired by his uncle Rebel Soul Jah and since then the group has been touring the world performing at major festivals.
Nhara also gave special mention to Mathias Bangure whom he said gave them a springboard to perform at regional festivals through Music Crossroads.
As he turns 38 today, Nhara said he feels mature like the proverbial old wine and wants to take his music to greater heights.
“This is my earthday (birthday) and we are celebrating the day l was born as the founder of Nehoreka that’s when the band was born. I was born at Gath’s Mine hospital in Mashava and bred in Gweru. I am also a product of Chivi Kwambavari clan. We are the descendants of Madhlangove hence my kind of music,” he explained.
“To date we have five albums and we have travelled the world and performed at some of the biggest festivals in Africa. Looking forward we want to put the Zimbabwean beat on the world map like what Bundu Boys, Ilanga and Mokoomba have done.”
The bash will also feature Victor Kunonga, Tendai Chimombe, Benjy Chidewe and Bob Nyabinde among others.
Nhara is married to popular newscaster Anna Miti and the couple is blessed with three children.
